"Giraffe" is done

I finished my Giraffe doll!

I had taken my granddaughters to the SF Zoo.  They have a viewing area where you can get right up next to a giraffe as it eats a chunk of leaves. I knew they have 12" to 18" long tongues, but seeing one up close is amazing!  and--they're black!

So when it came time to complete my doll club challenge of making a doll on a candlestick, I knew it had to be a giraffe! She is another female figure with an animal head. I wanted to feature that fantastic tongue, but she had to lick something tastier than leaves--so she got a lollipop.

I used my thinner version of my Yoga goddess pattern.  This pattern allows for any position*. Pose is very important to me--dolls can't talk--but they say a lot with the tilt of their hands, heads and posture. Giraffe is tightly stuffed with only partial armature, an outlining wire in her head and neck that pokes out to make horns and a doubled chenille stem in each arm/hand.  She is sewn into position and onto the cushion I made over the candlestick prong(ouch--not comfy to sit on!). I covered the candlestick with cloth too.  From a thrift store, it was a scratched, ugly chunk of wood.  A thinly smeared coat of Tacky glue and careful mitering was all it took.  The lollipop is Sculpey on a piece of bamboo scewer, colored with Sharpies and then shined with gloss medium.

I am really happy with her!
*Ute--thanks for showing me how to make an adjustable hip!

Welcome to my Art world!

I have finally taken the leap and am blogging!  I am just starting with an array of my work.  I spend a lot of time making art dolls and even more thinking about making them, which leaves no so much time for writing.  So I'm going to let my work talk for me for awhile.

My current project is a challenge entry for the doll club. I am in charge of challenges for my doll club, the Flying Phoebes. So you'd think I'd get the challenges done on time?  Not this one! The challenge was to make a doll on a candlestick.  I found a perfect candlestick at the thrift store, but then I got totally consumed with making my Hoffman Challenge doll. The candlestick waited patiently though. I'm hurrying back right now to start putting together the giraffe lady who will sit on it.  I had in my stash perfect purple giraffe fabric. She will soon be perching on the stick, licking a lollypop!  I can't wait--gotta create!
